Refrigerated containers have become the go to solution for cold storage. When shipping or storing any items that require a controlled temperature, a refrigerated shipping container is necessary to ensure the products maintain their condition. Often called “reefers”, refrigerated containers can be more complex than standard containers, but Container Alliance has formed a network of businesses familiar with all needs and concerns. Together we provide the best quality units and deliver right to your location.
A Few Questions to Consider Before Ordering:
How long will you need the refrigerated container?
First, decide between buying or renting a refrigerated container. If the container will be used for a long period of time or permanently, buying is the smartest option. Keep in mind, rental rates are not structured towards purchasing the container. If the unit is needed for temporary use, storage for rent is an excellent option especially if you are looking for flexibility. Research any municipal rules against containers in your area before ordering, but if you are still unsure how neighbors will react to a storage container, then we strongly recommend choosing a shipping container rental, rather than purchasing refrigerated shipping containers for sale.
Do you have adequate power?
Refrigerated containers possess an all electric cooling system that natively run on 460 3 phase power. If you do have 3 phase 208/220 a transformer can be installed on the unit making it dual capable and to run on either 208V/230V 3-Phase or 460V 3-Phase power. If you are running the unit with 208/220 you will need a dedicated 50 AMP circuit. If you are running the machine on 460 power you will need a dedicated 25 AMP circuit. Electric powered, these containers are an excellent alternative to diesel powered units. If you are uncertain about power capabilities, contact an electrician before ordering.
Is your location ready for delivery?
As a general rule, twice the length of the container plus 10 feet in a straight line is needed for a successful delivery. Adequate width is also required but the amount of length is typically the most common issue with delivery. Also, make sure the land is level. If not, the doors may not open and close easily. Wood blocks under the container is a good solution if you plan to place a container on uneven land. You will also need to make sure you will be able to provide power to the location you need the containers parked. Refrigerated Containers typically come with a 50ft power cord although longer cords can always be purchased.
Size Options
Refrigerated Containers do not have as many size options as typical shipping containers, you have only two common options which are 20ft Refrigerated Containers and 40ft High Cube Refrigerated Containers. For other shipping container sizes please visit our specifications page. With the ability to fit in a single parking space and be transported by a small maneuverable vehicle, the 20ft shipping container has become the standard for commercial storage needs. Double the size, the 40ft shipping container is able to meet any and all cold storage demands. The dimensions of the delivery location may determine which size is the best option.
Controlled Temperature
Our refrigerated containers can maintain a designated temperature ranging between -20 degrees Fahrenheit and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. With the ability to set an exact temperature, you can protect the contents of a storage container with precision and consistency. Controls allow you to set internal temperature to your desired level.
Strong Build
Built with corten steel, refrigerated shipping containers have the same basic outside dimensions as standard shipping containers. However, because all refrigerated containers are insulated, reefer containers have smooth sides. Reefers also have aluminum floors (unlike standard containers, with wood floors). Aluminum floors and stainless steel walls are more hygienic and easier to clean. These containers also come standard with lockable double doors on one end and durable t-rail flooring.
Good Uses
Often called “reefers”, refrigerated containers are ideal for shipping or storing perishable goods such as meat, seafood, vegetables, fruits and flowers. Make sure to cool your unit before loading it. Dependable and durable, these units are designed for outdoor use, but can be easily placed inside a warehouse for indoor cold storage. For this reason, worksites, festivals, and businesses with seasonal storage demands regularly utilize refrigerated shipping containers.
Pricing
Shipping container cost depends on shipping container dimensions vary mostly by age which will typically dictate the condition. New “One Trip Refrigerated” containers can range from around $17,000 to $30,000 depending on factory-built cost and location. Used Refrigerated containers can be as cheap as $6,000 up to $15,000 depending on age and current market conditions.
Maintenance
Maintaining your unit properly will maximize the container’s life and prevent outages. Make sure to turn the unit off, and open the air return before opening the cargo doors. Failing to do so can make opening the doors difficult and can damage the reefer unit.
Accessories
Power Cords and Plugs - Refrigerated containers typically come with 50ft of power cable and a male power plug that make it easy to connect them to various 3 phase intermodal equipment. You can purchase a female end to continue to use the cord or simply remove the plug and hardwire the refrigerated container to your three phase power source.
